The engine has a ceramic valve, and expansion- and compressor pistons (5a, 5b) including a main gasket (9) i.e. piston ring arrangement, where the pistons are thermally disconnected. Compressor power is directly transferred to a bearing and a crankshaft over a connecting rod. Compressor cylinders and a guide bush of an expansion cylinder form a unit for refrigeration. Stroke cross-sections are assigned to relatively small motor vehicle-series-crankshaft by a lateral separation of total stroke space. A pressurized air reservoir is separated from a heat exchanger section by a check valve.
