The method involves relaxing excessive quench water over an expansion valve in an expansion container (2) at atmospheric pressure. A liquid phase is guided from the expansion container by another expansion container (3) and expanded at pressure under the atmospheric pressure. The liquid phase is guided from the latter expansion container by a thickener- and/or lamella clarifier (4), and a fraction of sludge (7) is restored in the former expansion container, where the sludge is removed at the thickener- and/or lamella clarifier and fed by a filter system (5).
