The method involves measuring active power of a variable-speed drive motor (1) e.g. three-phase motor, by an active power measurement device (6) during acceleration of a rotary system. Energy contents of the rotary system in a process computer (7) are determined by integrating the active power over a preset period or a preset rotation speed increase, without exceeding firmly given secured rotation speed. The maximum permissible engine speed is determined from the maximum retention energy of a grinding wheel (3). A workpiece (9) is processed with the maximum permissible engine speed. An independent claim is also included for a grinding machine.
