The method involves detecting parameters of an exhaust gas i.e. nitrogen oxide, flowing in an exhaust gas passage (11) in exhaust sensors e.g. nitrogen oxide sensor (36) and lambda sensor (34) such as wide band lambda sensor. A burner (25) is operated for heating an effluent stream for defrosting the exhaust gas sensor, where the burner is arranged upstream of the exhaust gas sensor or at a same location as the exhaust gas sensor. Temperature in an environment of the exhaust gas sensor is determined. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program for operating an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine (2) a control and/or regulating device for operating an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine.
