The method involves providing a function of passing distance (d v) in a detection area (d d) of an environmental sensor during passing of objects (3-5), where the passing distance lies within a predetermined passing spacing region. The detection area is provided as an extension of a preset detection range (d f) by a predetermined safety distance (d s). The detection area is increased with detection of an object edge (7) around the predetermined safety distance. The predetermined safety distance is calculated in a function of vehicle velocity. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for parking a motor car in a parking space (2) a parking guidance assistant for assisting parking of a motor car in a parking space.
