The method involves inserting a differential gear (12) in a rear axle housing (14). A bearing shell (20) is mounted at the rear axle housing by a robot. Torsional backlash and/or a housing spread is measured by a guiding tool. A retaining ring (22) is selected from a set of the retaining rings with different thickness based on the measured housing spread and/or the measured torsional backlash. A drive shaft of a motor vehicle is coupled via a bevel gear (16). Tapered roller bearings (18) are pressed on the differential gear. An independent claim is also included for a tool for assembling a bearing shell of a differential gear and for measuring a torsional backlash and/or housing spread.
