The method involves using urea or aqueous urea solution as fuel on an anode side of a fuel cell. The aqueous urea solution is provided with a urea content of between 20 and 50 percent, in particular between 30 and 40 percent. The urea or urea solution is conducted over an injection pump or a jet pump to the anode side of the fuel cell. Decentralized electricity is generated. A supply tank is provided for storing urea or urea solution and connected to the supply tank arranged at the anode side of the fuel cell. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a fuel cell.
