The system has a piston-cylinder-unit (34) i.e. tandem main brake cylinder, arranged at a brake actuating element (10) i.e. brake pedal, via a mechanical connection device (26). A driver braking force exerted on the brake actuating element is partially transmitted to a piston (36) such that inner pressure is increased in the piston-cylinder-unit. A wheel brake cylinder (46) is hydraulically connected with the piston-cylinder unit and another piston-cylinder unit (12) e.g. single-chamber-main brake cylinder, and the brake actuating element is adjusted around a minimum-adjusting path. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a brake system.
