The proximity switch has a sensor unit (11) with a degaussing coil (LR) for fading magnetic field, where the degaussing coil is connected with a charging capacitor (CR) of an internal power supply unit by a rectifier (DR). Energy obtained from the degaussing coil is used for producing negative operation voltage, and a pulse generator (3) has a measuring resistor (RM) for measuring transmission current in a transmitter coil (LS), where length of transmission pulses depends on reaching a preset value of the transmission current in the transmitter coil. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an inductive proximity switch.
