The device (40) has a measuring zone (43) provided in an exhaust air duct of a heater and for detecting combustion air components, where the zone has a shape of half-ellipsoid. A frequency modulation device (48) modulates frequency of a measurement signal. A measuring sensor comprises a capacitive measuring probe provided with center and ground electrodes (41, 42). Length of the half-ellipsoid corresponds to projection length of the center electrode in an axial direction over the ground electrode and/or a protective sleeve (44) that is made of stainless steel. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting combustion air components.
