The method involves inserting a sealing device (2) into a primary channel. The sealing device is arranged at or in proximity of a junction of a junction channel in such a manner that the junction channel is sealed opposite to the primary channel. Test mists are initiated from the primary channel to the junction of the junction channel in which the junction channel is opened into the primary channel. Exit points of the test mists are tested, where the test mists are generated by a mist machine (4) that is arranged in the primary channel. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining false connections to waste or rainwater pipes, comprising a sealing unit.
