Use of a material based on glass, comprising (in wt.%, based on oxide) a mixture of silicon dioxide, fluorine and phosphorus pentoxide (20-95) and aluminum oxide (0.5-30), for producing a separator for an electrochemical energy storage, preferably for a lithium ion accumulator, is claimed. The density of the material is less than 3.7 g/cm 3. Independent claims are also included for (1) electrochemical energy storage, preferably lithium-ion accumulator comprising a housing for accommodating a positive and a negative electrode, and an electrolyte with the separator for the separation of the two electrodes from each other, where the separator is the above material based on glass; (2) a separator for an electrochemical energy storage which is formed by coating at least one electrode of the energy store with the above material based on glass; and (3) producing the separator for an electrochemical energy storage, comprising providing at least an electrode, providing the above material based on glass and converting it into a powder form or slurry form, applying it to the electrode and solidified.
