The device has a detection unit determining coordinates of a position of mark holes in a fixed coordinate system with respect to a workpiece. A marking head (5) i.e. industrial robot (7), is supplied with a handler that is controlled based on the determined coordinates of the mark-holes position. An optical sensor (9) determines coordinates of the position attained by the marking head using known coordinates at measuring points (10, 12) of the workpiece and a measuring scaffold (11) that is fixed with respect to the coordinate system. The measuring points are detected by the optical sensor.
