The casting container (10) has a cavity (14) for receiving the molten metal (12) such as magnesium alloy, which is separated by a partition (16) into bulk regions (22,24). The partition is transmissive for fluids and for solid blocks (26) between the bulk regions, up to a determined maximal grain size of the solid block. The partition is arranged to function as a sieve. The bulk region (24) is formed in the interior space of the cavity and the bulk region (22) is formed in the outer space of the cavity. An independent claim is included for method of treating molten metal.
