The method involves detecting a small image section (5) of web-like commodities (1) of a camera (2) i.e. line camera, with high frequency. An evaluation unit (8) integrated or separated into/from the camera is evaluated such that the camera triggers recording of a measuring camera (3) while achieving determined phase position of the commodities relative to the image section. An image area (6) is provided larger such that periods of the periodic structures of the commodities are detected. Parameters such as amplitudes and wavelengths of commodities are determined by another evaluation unit (4).
