The device has a holding frame (6) accommodating a stationary knife (4) and rotatably supported in a machine frame (1) of a wood chipper. The holding frame is retained by a safety device (8) in an operating position of the knife. The safety device releases the holding frame from the operating position during increased pressure loading at the knife. The safety device has a bolt element clamped by a spring unit i.e. plate spring. The bolt element acts together with a bolt retainer, where the bolt element and the retainer are fixed at the machine frame or the holding frame.
