The device (10) has a transport unit (12) for supplying value notes to a stacking wheel (20). A sensor (32) detects the values supplied to the stacking wheel. Another sensor (34) is arranged upstream of the former sensor and determines a characteristic of the supplied value notes. A control unit activates a drive unit e.g. electric motor, after one of preset time intervals after detection of the value notes by the respective sensors based on the characteristic of the supplied value notes. The control classifies the supplied value notes into two classes based on the characteristic. An independent claim is also included for a method for handling value notes.
