The engine has planetary gear (12) with freewheel (13) that is associated with clutch (14) via actuator (15). The freewheel is opened by driving a pulley (10) via crankshaft (11) during generator operation of belt starter generator. The freewheel is closed by driving the crankshaft via the pulley during motor operation of belt starter generator is closed. An independent claim is included for method for operating internal combustion engine.
