The device has a magneto resistive sensor device (MS) for detecting magnetic field. A movable component i.e. valve shaft (VS), includes a ferromagnetic coating (B) with teeth (R), which are suitable for measuring rotation of the movable component. The coating includes a periodically modulated longitudinal tooth structure. The magnetic field in which the coating is rotated with the structure relative to the sensor device, is modulated. The modulated magnetic field is converted into periodic signals in the sensor device. The periodic signals are evaluated as rotational signals. An independent claim is also included for a method for measuring rotation of a movable component within a fixed component.
