The device has a measuring mark (12) arranged on a valve stem (11) and provided with a pitch component in a longitudinal direction of the valve stem. A sensing unit (13) i.e. magneto-resistive sensor, detects movement e.g. rotation movement and lifting movement, of a valve (10) e.g. inlet valve and exhaust valve, based on the pitch component of the measuring mark. The measuring mark is formed by a screw thread, and a control and/or regulating unit (14) separates a rotation parameter and a lifting parameter from an evaluated output signal of the sensing unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for measuring a movement of a valve of a motor car.
