The device (2) has a discharge device (3) provided to discharge a capacitor (4), where the capacitor is placed in a region between a switchable separating device (1) and a potential separation device (5) of the device. A monitoring device (6) monitors hazardous condition (Zg) that is electric shock, of the device. The separating device and/or the discharge device transmits a control signal (Sig1, Sig2) based on the hazardous condition. The separating device comprises two-pole alternating current (AC) contactor for separating the device from a supply network. An independent claim is also included for a method for charging a high volt battery of a motor vehicle.
