The device (100) has a rotor i.e. deformation roller (102), rotatably mounted around a rotational axis, where rotational speed of the rotor depends on crash energy. A mass element (104) is coupled with the rotor to rotate the rotor around the rotational axis and to execute relative movement of a portion vertical to the rotational axis based on the rotational speed. A transmission device (106) transfers a portion of the relative movement of the mass element to a die adjustable unit (112) to adjust the rigidity of an adaptive energy absorbing structure. An independent claim is also included for an adaptive energy absorbing structure for deforming a deformation element.
