The method involves predicting an expected value of a variable associated with a thermal load of a four-wheel clutch (3), where the variable is a thermal load factor or a maximum clutch slippage. A preventive measure is decided based on the predicted value of the variable, where the preventive measure is clutch slippage reduction that is implemented by reducing limiting engine torque and/or increasing braking torque. The preventive measure is implemented against the thermal load of the clutch after decision of the preventive measure. An independent claim is also included for a control device for protecting a four-wheel clutch of a four-wheel motor car.
