Regulating a controlled variable by at least one manipulated variable in response to at least one measured variable, comprises forming a process variable from at least one measured variable, varying a control value of a manipulated variable constantly around an instantaneous control value, and changing the control value in response to a reaction of an actual value of the process variable to the variation of the control value. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a regulating device (1) for carrying out the above method, comprising an electronic process element (6) for forming the process variable, and an electronic control unit (8) located downstream to the process element, for changing the control value in response to the reaction of the actual value of the process variable, based on the variation of the manipulated variable; and (2) a use of the above method for regulating concentration of ions in water during electrodeionization of water, where an electrical voltage and an electrical current are generated and measured between two electrodes for the electrodeionization, and the process variable is formed from the electrical voltage and the electrical current.
