The method involves detecting negative pressure requirements for a pressure operating unit (22) and checking whether one of the operating unit required negative pressure is greater than adjustable operating vacuum provided by a vacuum source. The supply amount of power from internal combustion engine (12) to auxiliary units (32,34) is reduced until operating vacuum provided by the vacuum source is greater than negative pressure required by operating unit when the required negative pressure is greater than the operating vacuum.
