The device (10) has a switching unit (11) provided with switching elements (12, 13), which are partially engaged with a switching gate (17) for axial displacement (14) of cam elements (15, 16). A sensor unit (18) monitors the axial displacement of the cam elements. The sensor unit comprises a sensor element (19) to detect a parameter, which is dependent on force acting on the switching elements. The parameter is designed as axial movement of the switching elements, and the device is sensitive to a direction of the sensor element. The sensor element is designed as a capacitive sensor, inductive sensor, strain sensor and/or an acceleration sensor. An independent claim is also included for a method for utilizing a device for operating a valve train of a motor car.
