The method involves utilizing controlled variables of a stator flux and/or stator current (R) in a rotor part and a stator part. An electric machine is set with stator voltage. Desired values (PSIs*) and actual values (PSIs) of the controlled variables are compared in a coordinate system. A major axis of the coordinate system is set toward the total stator flux. The total stator flux is oriented through magnets of the electric machine arranged in the rotor part and/or the stator part and energized windings arranged at the stator part and/or the rotor part. An independent claim is also included for an electric machine.
