The device has sensor for detecting environmental data of motor vehicle. A control unit (11) has internal protection circuit (18) that protects control unit against electrostatic discharge, prior to faulty surge. The sensor is coupled with an input (15) of control unit through a data line (12), so that environment data is transmitted to control unit in the form of voltage signals (US). The amplitude of voltage signals is limited to measurable value of control unit by voltage limiting unit (17) connected to internal protection circuit. An independent claim is included for method for operating driver assistance device.
