The detention device has a safety belt (3) and a reservoir airbag, where the safety belt is assigned to a vehicle seat (2). The reservoir airbag is triggered in a frontal collision of the vehicle. The reservoir airbag is formed such that the reservoir airbag is positioned in triggered condition of a section of the safety belt in the direction of an upper leg of an occupant (1). The section of the safety belt runs over a reservoir area (1.1) of the occupant. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a detention device for an occupant of a vehicle.
