The invention relates to a device (1) for applying a transcutaneous electrical stimulation stimulus to the surface of a section of the human ear (2) which has a holding element (3) which can be attached to or in the ear (2) and a number of electrodes (4, 5, 6 ), which are arranged on or in an electrode carrier (7), wherein the device (1) comprises a control device (8) which controls or regulates the production of a potential difference between the electrodes (4, 5, 6). In order to enable improved and safer transcutaneous stimulation, the invention provides for at least three electrodes (4, 5, 6) to be arranged on or in electrode carriers (7), the at least three electrodes (4, 5, 6) being arranged in a level (E). Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for operating such a device.
