The images of the work piece at several rotational positions are acquired by an image processing sensor (28). The envelope contour of the rotating workpiece is determined on the basis of the gray value information of the images. Measurement error produced due to positional deviation between the workpiece axis and the center rotation axis during rotation of the workpiece is determined. The measurement error produced due to positional deviation is corrected or excluded.
