The amplifier has amplifier circuits (13, 14) connected with each other such that an output signal of the circuits is combined to a total output signal (18). A control circuit (31) compares total output signal with a reference value (30), where the amplifier directs an adjustable damping unit over an attenuator (11). The damping unit attenuates an input signal (10) of the amplifier, and the control circuit generates a control signal (29) of the attenuator based on the comparison result. The control circuit limits the control signal with a maximum control signal. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an amplifier.
