Methods and systems to reduce engine pre-ignition based on a feedforward probability of pre-ignition and feedback from a pre-ignition event are provided. In response to an indication of pre-ignition, a cylinder may be enriched while an engine load is limited. Enrichment can be followed by leaning to restore oxygen levels from exhausting catalyst feed. The decrease steps can be adjusted based on engine operating conditions, a pre-ignition number, and the nature of the pre-ignition.
