Methods and systems are provided to regulate ignition and / or fuel injection in a cylinder based on late combustion, partial combustion, or misfire in an adjacent cylinder. A pressure sensor coupled to a cylinder exhaust port is used to scan exhaust gas pressure pulsations via a cylinder exhaust valve event, and accurately adjusts a quantity of debris generated and discharged from the cylinder as well as debris received from the adjacent cylinder estimate. Accordingly, attenuating actions are taken on the cylinder prior to the occurrence of a pre-ignition event.
