The method involves transmitting an exhaust gas stream of an additive heating device that heats lubricant of an internal combustion engine (5) e.g. diesel engine, and/or a gear box and an auxiliary unit (8), to the engine, where the auxiliary unit is designed as an initiator, a starter, an electrochemical energy storage and/or generator. A heat exchanger arrangement (3) of an exhaust line (2) in the heating device is arranged in or at an oil sump (7) of the engine and/or the gear box. An outlet (4) is arranged on the exhaust line in a direction of flow before the arrangement. An independent claim is also included for a device for preliminary and/or supplementary heating of coolant and/or lubricant of an internal combustion engine.
