The method involves exposing an element i.e. housing (1), to pressure and/or vacuum. Deformation of an elastic component of the element due to the pressure and/or vacuum is detected by a sensor system with optical units e.g. camera and light barrier. The detected deformation is evaluated with respect to leakage of the element. An aperture of the housing is provided with a membrane (3) as the elastic component, where an actuating element (2) projects to the aperture from the housing. The housing is provided with a closable test hole.
