The method involves determining distance of defined points (P1, P2) of a vehicle (4) and a transverse motion of the points to a position marker (1) and/or an angular misalignment of a longitudinal axis of the vehicle from a predetermined target axis during determination of the position and orientation of the vehicle. The position mark is comprised of a directionally selective light radiation performance, and an image corresponding to the performance is evaluated and recorded by a stereo camera to determine the position and orientation of the vehicle relative to the position mark. An independent claim is also included for a device for assisting a driver during controlling a vehicle, comprising an evaluation unit.
