A charger-assembled rectifier / inverter for a permanent motor / induction motor drive of an electric or hybrid electric vehicle

A vehicle includes an energy storage system (ESS) that is rechargeable using electrical power from an external AC power supply, a drive rectifier / inverter module (TPIM), one or two motors, and a controller. The TPIM has two rectifiers / inverters. The controller turns on selected semiconductor devices of the TPIM and selected induction windings of the motor to transform electrical power up from the AC power supply to charge the ESS when the vehicle is not running. With two motors, a contactor enables induction windings of a first motor to be connected to the switches of the first rectifier / inverter as an input filter, and an additional semiconductor switch is positioned between the ESS and an output side of the switches of the second rectifier / inverter. A controller charges the ESS by turning on selected semiconductor switches of the TPIM and induction windings of the motor to charge the ESS without using an on-board battery charger module.
