The method involves monitoring engine-enabled status of internal combustion engine of vehicle to determine (24) when engine is supplied with fuel during driving cycle. The vehicle is driven at speed greater than predetermined speed after supply of fuel. The stored denominator is incremented (32) at each cycle, to define current denominator. The current utilization rate for each identified driving cycle is calculated by actual count, if stored count is incremented during cycle, or stored numerator is divided by current denominator, if stored count during cycle is not incremented.
