Method for thermally storing electrical energy in containment vessel of e.g. light-water reactor, involves converting vapor energy into electric power at outer side of vessel by steam turbine and associated generator of power plant
The method involves heating a storage material (4) by electric energy directly using an electrical resistance heater (3) in a containment vessel (1) of a decommissioned nuclear power plant, so that vapor is generated from the storage material heat based on requirements. Vapor energy is converted into electric energy at an outer side of the vessel by a steam turbine (9) and an associated generator (11) of the power plant. The generated vapor is reheated by a natural gas-powered heater (10) during cooling the storage material. A thermal insulation layer is formed in an inside wall of the vessel. An independent claim is also included for a device for thermally storing electrical energy.
