The method involves controlling pressure in adjustable pressure chambers (21, 22). Compensation force is adjusted in one of the adjustable pressure chambers on a hardhole (5) during stationary operation and control force works against flow in the other adjustable pressure chamber. The amount and/or the direction of the compensation force are varied depending on demand. The variable flow pump (1) comprises a support surface (12) for the hardhole, and seal is formed between adjustable pressure chambers. An independent claim is also included for a variable flow pump.
