Battery module with microencapsulated phase change materials as a thermal management system for motor vehicles. In one form, the microencapsulated phase change material is in the form of a foam consisting of a core encased in a general polymer-based shell. In a more specific form, the foamed material can be tailored to withstand more than one temperature, e.g. B. a relatively cold temperature and a relatively high temperature to undergo an isothermal phase change. A thermal management system based on the use of such a microencapsulated phase change material includes heating and cooling capabilities for conditions that are likely to be met under both high temperature and low temperature vehicle operating conditions. Methods for controlling the temperature in battery modules are also described.
