A package orientation station (13) has a pivoting head (18) with a gripping system (22) to transfer packages (1). The station has a controlled conveyor (23) controlled by an automation system to coordinate forward movements of the controlled conveyor with movements of the head and to permit smooth transfer of the packages. The packages are stopped/partially stopped on the controlled conveyor when the packages are transferred by the gripping system whose flaps (27, 28) are provided with foam coverings.
