The assembly (2) has a conductive substrate (8) comprising an electrode coating (12) formed on a substrate (10), where the electrode coating comprises a transparent conductive oxide layer (20) doped with zinc oxide. A coloring photoactive layer (14) comprises a coloring carrier material (16) formed on the conductive substrate, and a coloring (18) presents the carrier material. The conductive substrate defines a contact surface (8A) with the coloring carrier material, where the contact surface of the conductive substrate includes a root mean square roughness between 3 and 10 nanometers. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a coloring photovoltaic cell comprising a counter-electrode forming layer formed on a counter-substrate (2) a method for manufacturing a coloring photoactive layer/conductive substrate assembly.
