The device (10) has a connecting unit i.e. cable (16), that connects a payload (15) to a base (13) of a stratospheric probe balloon (11), where the balloon is provided with a top part (12) and is black in color. A separating unit (18) i.e. fusible wire, separates the payload from the base of the balloon. A set of sensors e.g. temperature sensors, delivers signal representing separation of the payload from the base to cause reversal of the balloon and exhaustion of gas from the balloon for causing descent of the balloon. An independent claim is also included for a method for triggering descent of a stratospheric probe balloon containing gas and for recovering its payload.
