Spatially distinct Spectral Doppler information is acquired (30). Spatially distinct transmit beams are formed (26) at the same time or in parallel. One or more receive beams are formed (28) in response to each transmit beam, providing samples for a plurality of remote locations laterally from each other. A spectrum is determined (30) for each of a plurality of locations. In another technique, samples are acquired for different regions at different times. The scan for each region is interleaved (40) based on the anatomical operation. Since the spectral estimate (30) is based on continuous series in the transmit and receive time, the scan for the regions takes place over a period of time sufficient for spectral estimation before scanning for a different region takes place. By using an anatomical operation, sufficient time is provided for the spectral estimate (30). Due to the anatomical operation, different regions are associated with flows at different times.
