A fault detection method for a turbomachine by monitoring the performance of said turbomachine, wherein measuring at least one performance parameter of the turbomachine to form a current signature (Sc) performance of said turbomachine; comparing the current signature (Sc) of said turbomachine with a database of failures (3) associating reference signatures (Sr) with performance of said turbomachine with fault identifiers (ID), the database of failures ( 3) being obtained by fault simulation from a theoretical model of the thermodynamic cycle of said turbomachine and the fault identifier (ID) of said turbomachine is determined for said current signature (Sc).
