The device (10) has backlight elements (21, 22) illuminating a display element (20) by using light sources i.e. LEDs, where a main view direction of a user i.e. driver, is parallel to a direction (11). A portion of a display surface of the display element is orthogonal to another direction (12). The former direction is obliquely oriented with respect to the latter direction. The light sources exhibit radiation characteristics (21') such that power radiated in the former direction is greater than power radiated in the latter direction. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a backlight element.
