The marking device comprises an attachment portion 205, such as a conical sleeve, for attaching to the top of a traffic cone or bollard 203, an arm extending from the attachment portion and a supporting element disposed on the distal end of the arm for supporting a cord or rope 207. Also claimed is a method for marking a safety zone in roadworks by providing a line of traffic cones or bollards for defining an outer boundary of the safety zone. The marking device is attached to the top of each of the cones and a rope is provided on the supporting devices on the distal ends of each of the arms to join together the cones with the rope defining an inner boundary of the safety zone.
