A matrix bit body for oil or gas drilling where either the body or at least a portion of the bodyâ s surface is made from a composite comprising a metal bond phase and at least one of grains of polycrystalline carbide and/or grains of binderless carbide. The polycrystalline and/or binderless carbide may be one or more of W, Ti, V, Cr, Nb, Mo, Ta, Hf and/or Zr carbide and have a grain size of â ¤ 15 microns. The binderless carbides have less than 3 % by weight binder. Additional carbides, nitrides, borides and/or oxides may also be present in the composite. The composite can be made using a powder comprising the grains of polycrystalline/binderless carbide, which can also comprise grains of the carbides, nitrides, borides and/or oxides and optionally one or more metals.
